A Butler HS graduate lettering two sports, basketball and baseball. The Butler basketball teams he played on had a record of 79 wins and only 14 losses. he was a member of the 1991 WPIAL championship team. His teams won the section title in both 1991 and 92. He was named to the Class AAAA First Team in 1993, and was selected to play in the Roundball Classic. His senior year post season basketball awards included the Post-Gazette Fab Five All Star Team. He ws offered a basketball scholarship by several colleges including the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesnse University, Robert Morris University, Bucknell, and LaFayette. He also played baseball for the Golden Tornado as a third baseman. He was named a member of the Post Gazette All-Area Team in 1992. The following season he was named to the All WPIAL Class AAA team as a pitcher. He was signed by the San Diego Padres after graduation as a pitcher. He played for the Padres from 1998 to 2000. He moved on to the Florida Marlins for one year.He then signed with the Chicago Cubs from 2002 thru 2004 and then the Boston Red Sox for two more years. He was an All-Star selection in 2005. His overall record in the major leagues was 87 wins and 86 losses with 1,217 strikeouts. Once he finished his professional baseball career, he turned to coaching basketball and has continued as the head coach of the Butler HS boys basketball team.
