John was a Slippery Rock HS graduate and an outstanding point guard on their basketball team as a three year letterman. He set a single game scoring record for SRHS in 1962 with 41 points. The 1962 team won the Butler County League Championship, and went on to the PIAA finals. He was selected to several post-season tournament teams. His senior year he was the second leading scorer in Butler County, and named to the All- County Team by the Butler Eagle. He was also named All-State Honorable Mentinhis senior year. He spent his summers playing baseball in the PREP League as a member of the Butler Cubs. He then went on to continue playing basketball at Indiana University of Pa for three years as a point guard. After graduation from IUP he became a basketball coach for Purchase Line HS. From there he moved on to the Slippery Rock HS basketball coaching position in 1968 at age 23. He left that position in 1973 to become an assistant coach at Slippery Rock University. He retired from coaching after 38 years in successful years. In 2006 he co-founded a basketball club program in Pittsburgh growing to 15 teams. In 2012 he was recognized as the 2012 Outstanding Alumnus of Indiana University of PA.
