Nick Attended Butler HS from 1936-1939. From 1940-1943 he attended Washington & Jefferson College with honors and then earned his Masters and Doctorate from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He then attended UCLA in 1944 to learn weather conditions for the US Navy. He lettered in baseball at W&J in 1942 & 43. He was the player manager of the1943 team. He went on to play baseball at UCLA on the 1944 team. His team won the Pacific Coast College Championship. After college he enlisted in the US Navy serving in the South Pacific. From 1944-1946 he played on baseball teams on Guam. During his earlier years in Butler he played in summer leagues for Highfield, Butler Cub, and the Saxonburg Eagle.
